Passholders get early access from noon on August 8 until noon on August 10.  The Trail & District Arts Council presents Janelle Fung and Marina Thibeault: Invisible Cities performing classical pieces for piano and viola in The Griff at The Bailey Theatre on Friday, February 9 at 7:30 pm as part of our Classical series.  Celebrated concert duo Marina Thibeault (viola) and Janelle Fung (piano) delight audiences across Canada, the United States, and Europe with their elegant, spellbinding performances and engaging presence.  Their program “Invisible Cities” includes:  Invisible Cities by British composer Charlotte Bray, one of the most esteemed and in-demand composers of her generation. Her music is exhilarating, inherently vivid, and richly expressive with lyrical intensity. She won an Ivor Novello Award in 2019 (Solo or Duo) for Invisible Cities, where fragments of melody form a connecting thread through the score, linking movements together. The work is inspired by the novel ‘Invisible Cities’ by Italo Calvino.  Sonata op.11 no:4 Fantaisieby Paul Hindemith, arguably THE composer for the viola. This sonata’s musical language has a rather unusual form, with a short introductory movement, a theme and variations, and a finale that interrupts the variation-sequence only to resume it later. It suggests the genre of fantasy-sonata cultivated by some of the Romantic composers.  i>The Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 147 is the last composition by Dmitri Shostakovich. It was completed on July 5, 1975, weeks before his death and is dedicated to Fyodor Druzhinin, violist of the Beethoven Quartet.  About the Artists:  Marina Thibeault is a 2023 JUNO Award winner for Classical Album of the year (Large Ensemble) for the album “Viola Borealis”. Since being named Radio-Canada's classical "Revelation" for 2016-2017, violist Marina Thibeault has become an accomplished soloist and chamber musician playing across genres. Marina's many performance highlights include Berlioz's Harold in Italy with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal, and the North American premiere of Peteris Vasks's concerto with the Sinfonia Toronto. Marina's first album, “Toquade” (2017), was nominated by the ADISQ and Prix Opus for Album of the Year. Her interest in opera has also led to collaborations with Nicole Cabell, Teresa Stratas, and William Warfield. Ms. Fung has won numerous national and international competitions, including the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, the Concours OSM-Standard Life, the Canadian Music Competition, and BC Touring Council “Artist of the Year” in 2014.
